How do I monogram a basket without hooping it?

I have two hoops for my Janome Machine, but I have an order for baskets that are too small to fit into either of my hoops. Is it possible to monogram them without the hoop and put them straight onto the machine, or is it just too tricky to try? The baskets are made of a material similar to canvas.
